Ariana Grande has remained outspoken with fans regarding her experience with mental health. Following the terrorist attack that occurred at her Manchester concert in 2017, she said that she started experiencing physical anxiety symptoms, including panic attacks. And in a letter reportedly sent to fans attending one of her recent concerts, the singer said she would be forced to cancel a meet-and-greet because of how she was feeling due to anxiety and depression.
According to HuffPost UK, Grande announced the cancellation in an email sent to fans planning to attend the Antwerp, Belgium, meet-and-greet scheduled for Friday, August 30. In a screenshot of the reported email, Grande said she planned to “preserve energy for the show,” and because her “anxiety and depression have been at an all time high lately,” she needed to cancel Friday’s fan event and the accompanying soundcheck party. “I don’t want to rush through our time together or seem shaky,” she reportedly wrote. “I like spending actual time with you and I won’t be able to be present or give you the best of me today.”
Despite the reported cancellation of the pre-show activities, Grande did go on to perform on Friday as scheduled. Fans have been tweeting their well wishes for the performer, with one fan writing, “forever proud and inspired by ariana for pushing through her anxiety to do what she loves and make us happy,” and another saying, “breaks my heart that ariana has periods of anxiety and depression like this. she’s such a light in our lives n only deserves love. just wish the world could be kind to her always ya know.”
It is important to note that Grande has not addressed or confirmed the reports of an alleged cancellation on her social media, but she did share a promise to fans on Friday, and wrote, “i’ll give u all i have n nothing less i promise.”
Anxiety and depression can be debilitating, and everyone, including celebrities like Ariana Grande, have their ways of coping with mental-health issues. It’s great to see that fans remained supportive of Grande during this time, and ultimately, whether the singer needs to cancel events or not remains up to her and how she’s feeling. As fans and followers, we can only remain supportive and give her the time and space that she needs. After a year that’s included multiple albums, perfume releases, and a world tour, she deserves what’s best for her.
